As the U.S. and Russia debate extending their New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty past 2021, it’s a question that can come to mind: What happens to nuclear weapons that countries agree to decommission? In eastern Ukraine’s Pavlohrad Chemical Plant, many of them essentially get a second chance. Our #InUkraine program this spring took a look at how the Pavlohrad Chemical Plant converts solid fuel from Soviet-era, intercontinental ballistic missiles for use in new, non-nuclear, medium-range missiles.

-This intro earlier incorrectly identified the date for Russia and the U.S. to resume bilateral talks on the New START treaty. That date has not been announced, but ongoing discussions about "strategic security" are scheduled for mid-July, according to Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov.
