Funerals were held on both sides of the Tajik-Kyrgyz border after armed clashes on April 28-29 claimed more than 50 lives. With a cease-fire in place since May 1, evacuees have begun returning home, but many have found their houses damaged or destroyed by fighting and looting.
Tajikistan will hold a presidential election on October 11. There are six candidates in the race, including the incumbent, Emomali Rahmon, who is running for office for a fifth time.
Young Tajik men are being taken from the streets by people in plain clothes and reportedly sent to serve in the army for two years. Sometimes, the men are taken without any prior notice.
