On June 6, 2021, Russian opposition politician Dmitry Gudkov, recently released from detention in a debt case, became the latest government critic to flee Russia for an indefinite stay abroad. Gudkov claims that government threats against his family, intended to derail his reelection to Russia’s parliament in 2021, prompted this “difficult” decision. The Kremlin has commented that Gudkov is free to go. But though he no longer plans to run for parliament, the 41-year-old former Duma member, now resident in Ukraine, told Current Time’s Aleksei Aleksandrov that he has no intention of ending his political campaign for change in Russia.
