With tens of thousands of new COVID-19 cases each day and a vaccination rate of just 16.2 percent, Ukraine, Europe’s second-largest country after Russia, is facing a growing pandemic crisis. Current Time visited two of eight Ukrainian regions where the government has intensified COVID-19 restrictions to halt unsustainable infection rates. In this “red zone,” proof of vaccinations or negative COVID-19 test results are now required for employees, customers, and public passengers. But, as elsewhere in Europe, police enforcing these rules can make tempers flare.
