A Ukrainian church changed the Orthodox world forever when, on January 5, 2019, the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, the head of Eastern Orthodoxy, granted it independence from the Russian Orthodox Church. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko hailed the decision for severing "the last fetters tying us to Moscow," but the move has angered the Russian Orthodox Church. Several months before the the patriarch's move, Current Time correspondent Anna Shamanska put the conflict in perspective.
