Bursts of explosions are seen on November 5, 2020 during fighting between Armenian-Karabakhi and Azerbaijani forces near Shushi (Shusha), a strategic hilltop town about a half-hour's drive from Karabakh's main town, Stepanakert (Khankendi).

Before the arrival of Azerbaijani troops, a man drives a car past a building reportedly damaged from shelling of the Karabakhi town of Shushi (Shusha) in late October 2020.  Badly damaged buildings from the first Karabakh war in the early 1990s can still be found throughout the town.

Unidentified servicemen head toward Armenia on November 8, 2020, the day Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev announced that Azerbaijani forces had retaken control of Shusha (Shushi in Armenian). Although Armenian President Nikol Pashinian maintains that fighting continues there, Karabakh's de facto government has conceded that it has lost control of the town.

Azerbaijan has pledged that it will investigate the shelling of Shushi's (Shusha's) Holy Savior Cathedral, the town's main Armenian Apostolic church. Baku rejects media claims that religion plays any role in the latest round of fighting over Karabakh, but local residents who see the cathedral as a symbol of Karabakh are not reassured.

An armed man walks along a street in Shushi (Shusha) a few days before de facto Nagorno-Karabakh leader Arayik Harutiunian announced on October 29, 2020 that Azerbaijani forces were 5 kilometers away from the town.

A car drives past the remains of a rocket shell near Shushi (Shusha) in late October 2020. Until 2017, the twisty, two-lane mountain road running from Karabakh's main town, Stepanakert, through Shushi was the only way for local residents to reach Armenia.

Street celebrations broke out across Baku, the Azerbaijani capital, on November 8, 2020 after President Ilham Aliyev announced that Azerbaijan's army had retaken Shusha (Shushi). Azerbaijan lost control of the town more than 28 years ago, in May 1992.
